Holiday Travel

Whether you’re traveling across the state or driving across the country to celebrate the holidays with family and friends, traveling as a family is often exciting, albeit a little stressful.

Here are some travel tips to make the holidays a little brighter and the travel safe and stress-free.

Get Your Vehicle Checked Out

Millions of people travel by plane during the holidays, and millions more opt to hop in the car and drive to their destination. While a holiday family road trip is typically a more cost-effective way to travel, it can have disastrous and expensive results if your car is not road-ready.

No one ever wants to get stranded by the side of the road in the middle of nowhere, but it’s even more stressful and inconvenient if it happens near the holidays. Save yourself the hassle of looking for a tow truck and spending money on repairs by having your trusted mechanic check out your vehicle. In addition to checking the tread on your tires and getting the oil changed, have your fluids topped off as well.

Pack an Emergency Kit

Your holiday packing list is undoubtedly full, and you might wonder how you’ll fit everything in the car, but one thing you shouldn’t pass on is an emergency kit. They type of emergency kit you put together typically revolves around the weather or other things you might need, so your kit may be different from the one on this list

Some “must haves” to consider include a tire gauge to check your air pressure, blankets, drinking water, non-perishable food, flashlights, and a collapsible snow shovel.

Have Alternate Routes or Plans Mapped Out

Living in a tech-savvy age, it’s easy to rely on our smartphones for everything, but it’s always a good idea to have back up plans. Not only should you map out your route before you hit the road, but you should have some other essential information written down just in case your phone dies, you lose a signal, or can’t use your smartphone.

As always, you should avoid using your phone while driving. Not only is it against the law in most states, but it also increases your risk of being in a distracted driving-related accident.

Share Travel Info with Family and Friends

Regardless of your mode of travel, it’s a good idea to share your travel information, such as destination ETA and other essential info, with friends, family, and neighbors. This information can be helpful if you get stuck in a snowstorm in the mountains and don’t show up to your destination or if your neighbors need to contact you while you’re away.

While accidents and emergencies are rare while traveling, there’s always the likelihood that something can happen. It’s always better to be overly prepared than to be underprepared.

Take Your Time and Never Drive While Tired or Under the Influence

The holiday season is busy, and you probably feel like there’s not enough time to do everything you want to do. Try to give yourself enough time when traveling and take breaks if you need to. Driving while drowsy is as dangerous as driving drunk, and driving under the influence of alcohol is unlawful and potentially fatal.

Give yourself time and be patient. Holiday travel should be a time for bonding with family members, not a time to be stressed out.
